Treasures of Aht Urhgan was first announced the at the 2005 Tokyo Game Show. Besieged and Assault are the main battle content systems added in this expansion. Einherjar and Salvage were also added, but required more dedication to advance into with a dedicated Linkshell compared to the much lower barrier of access of the other two allowing for pick-up groups and shout parties. Pankration was not as successful as any of the other battle systems introduced with the expansion.

The expansion brought about the jobs BLU, COR, and PUP, along with two new summons, Alexander & Odin. A new Ultimate Weapons category, Mythic Weapons with their associated Weapon Skills. A new line up of the well established HNMs were introduced with a new final boss of the expansion meant to rival Absolute Virtue; the Pandemonium Warden.

The continent of Aradjiah, home of the West Aht Urhgan and specifically the hub town of Aht Urhgan Whitegate. Many new enemy's were introduced that were icons of the Final Fantasy series, such as Flan, Soulflayer, Cerberus, and Khimaira. Five new Beastmen were introduced; Lamiae, Mamool Ja, Troll, Qiqirn, and Poroggo.

A lot of controversy surrounded this expansion, as it was only released in the DVD-ROM format on PC. At this time, not many people had a DVD-ROM for their PC. As a result a large number of players had to purchase the game for a registration key and torrent the files, or buy a DVD-ROM drive just to install the game.
