== What Is RSE? ==

RSE, or "Race Specific Equipment", is a set of level 27-33 armor from twenty years ago. However, a limited-time recurring event was introduced in 2026 that lets you reforge it to item level 119. This reforged RSE is specifically intended for new players as an "on ramp" piece of gear to get new level 99s up to speed.
* To check whether the event is currently running, see [[Strange Happenings in Vana'diel]] or check the "Ongoing and Upcoming Events" section of the wiki's main page.
* As of June 2026, you '''cannot''' get the relevant endgame items when the event is not running. If someone linked you here and it's ''not'' running, sorry! You're out of luck for now.

== The Original RSE ==
The original RSE can be obtained in either an easy (but expensive) way and a cheap (but tedious) way:
* It can be purchased from the [[Curio Vendor Moogle]] for 100,000 gil per piece with {{KI}} [["Rhapsody in Umber"]]. It is worth checking the Auction House before purchasing, as these pieces may occasionally be found there for substantially less than 100K gil each.
* It can be obtained, one piece at a time, from the quest [[The Goblin Tailor]].
** This quest is available for every race/sex combo about twice every real-life week for 8 hours and requires hunting down a [[Treasure Chest]] in a dungeon.
** Do it if this sounds fun to you, but don't if it sounds tedious. The items are on the Moogle for a reason.
** You can't pick a piece that you've already chosen as a reward from this quest a second time. Similarly, if you do this quest four times, then pay for a race change, you can't do it again. This isn't super relevant to most people, but I'm mentioning it for the one person reading this who would otherwise run into it!

== Reforging to Item Level 119 ==

Obviously, RSE is useless when you're level 99. That's where [[Strange Happenings in Vana'diel]] comes in.
* While the event is on, alternate versions of [[Kirin]], [[Fafnir]], and [[Alexander]] will spawn in [[Ru'Aun Gardens]], [[The Boyahda Tree]], and [[Alzadaal Undersea Ruins]].
* After these [[NM]]s are defeated, they will leave behind a Treasure Chest that can be opened by any number of players for the next 10 minutes before it vanishes. After the Chest vanishes, the NM will respawn 45 minutes later.
** You '''do not need to participate in the fight''' to receive the rewards! Just examine the Treasure Chest.
* Each Treasure Chest contains a guaranteed piece of loot - {{Item Tooltip|Kirin's mane}}, {{Item Tooltip|Fafnir's Scale}}, or {{Item Tooltip|Iron Giant Shard}} respectively - that is used along with an original piece of RSE in a [[Synergy]] recipe to create a piece of i119 RSE.
** Specifically, {{Item Tooltip|Kirin's mane}} for the hands, {{Item Tooltip|Fafnir's Scale}} for the feet, {{Item Tooltip|Iron Giant Shard}} for the legs, and all three are required for the body.

== Why Use RSE +1? ==
RSE +1 is useful for brand new level 99 players for a few reasons:
* RSE +1 pieces have substantially more -[[Damage Taken]]% than other early i119 gear options. This will increase your survivability until you get something beyond [[:Category:Ambuscade_Rewards#Armor|Ambuscade Armor +2]].
** Fresh 99s who are having issues with survivability should beeline RSE +1, then pick up the guaranteed [[Limbus]] accessory rewards ({{Item Tooltip|Murky Ring}} and {{Item Tooltip|Alabaster Earring}}) for a total of -41% DT (and then you're already nearly at the -50% cap!)
* Each RSE +1 piece has 35 [[Magic Atk. Bonus]], which makes it good for Magical or [[:Category:Hybrid_Weapon_Skill|Hybrid Weaponskill]]s until you get something better.
** Along the same lines, its 40 [[Magic Accuracy]] per piece is not totally embarrassing either.
* It looks hideous, so you learn about [[Lockstyle]]s sooner rather than later.
